When it comes to designing the chassis, what matters are its durability and ruggedness. To ensure this, we have been using a sturdy ladder frame since the beginning. Its specific strengths are most apparent when used off-road.

Perfecting a convincing base concept.

As all other areas of competence, we consciously rely on a mix of continuity and change. With its precisely guided coil spring axle construction, the sturdy ladder frame – which has been used since the G-Class’s initial introduction – stands for continuity. Functioning like a supporting pillar, it assures the G-Class’s solid ruggedness. The new axle architecture, on the other hand, stands for change. Thanks to coil spring equipped independent double wishbone suspension with integrated shock absorbers in the front, the G-Class is easier to manoeuvre and boasts precise wheel control. Supporting the rear is a 5-link solid axle with coil springs and separate shock absorbers. This allows for even higher ground clearance and better off-road traction. At the same time, the new axle architecture markedly increases the car’s on-road performance.

Even the best engine is only as good as its periphery. Within this area of competence, we create the foundation for the seamless use of the modern Mercedes-Benz powerplants and make sure they are able to exploit their performance in the most efficient way possible.

This shows, for instance, on the shell’s underbody which is protected against heavy damage resulting from off-road use. Its virtual indestructibility is also apparent in the solid steel parts that allow for high roof loads. When designing the interior, we make sure to continue the body’s clear lines.

Amongst others, this comes into effect in the context of comfort-increasing features such as parking and telematics systems, but most of all in the field of safety. Included in this area are beneficial assistance systems such as ABS, BAS and ESP® as well as lane departure warning and traffic sign assistance systems. This is also where the optimum linking of the components comes into its own: If, for instance, the ESP® is triggered, the system not only engages the brakes but also decreases the engine’s torque. Off-road, one can activate one of the three 100% locking differentials with the push of a button while control systems such as ESP®, ABS and driver assistance systems are deactivated. These are just two examples from this challenging and interesting field of activities. Tough challenges for all those involved are guaranteed.

The tasks in this field include the examination of all designs for their observance of the design spaces and minimum clearances. Complementing this field of activities is the transparent creation of measurement and quantity information.

By explicit customer request we can develop special vehicles designed for particular tasks. Optimally adapting the G-Class to highly specific situations presents great challenges.
